Mexico to open Gold Cup defense vs. El Salvador

Mexico will open its Gold Cup defense against El Salvador and meet Costa Rica and Cuba in the first round of the football championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Tournament host the United States will play Canada, Panama and Guadeloupe in Group C, and Group B includes Grenada, Guatemala and Honduras.

Costa Rica and Cuba play the tournament opener on June 5 in Arlington, Texas, followed by Mexico-El Salvador.

If Mexico wins its group, it will play a quarterfinal on June 18 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, against the third-place team from Group B or C.

The semifinals are on June 22 in Houston, with the final on June 25 in Pasadena, California.
