Mexico will send a mostly young squad to next year's Copa America despite a threat from South American officials to omit the Mexicans and Japan from future tournaments if they don't bring more experienced players.

Mexico federation president Justino Compean says the squad will only contain five players over the age of 23 as the priority is the CONCACAF Gold Cup - the regional championship for North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Mexico and Japan will play as guest teams in the Copa America, a continental championship that opens on July 1 with Brazil and Argentina the favorites.
