McClaren's Twente close to title

McClaren's men remain a point clear of Ajax - who thrashed Heracles Almelo 4-0 - with just one game to go. A win at mid-table NAC Breda next weekend will be enough to claim the crown irrespective of what Ajax manage at NEC Nijmegen. Twente had to work hard to see off Feyenoord but a goal in each half from Blaise Nkufo and Miroslav Stoch proved enough. Ajax had a more comfortable afternoon in Amsterdam after establishing a 2-0 advantage against Heracles inside 37 minutes thanks to a double from Siem De Jong. Marko Pantelic scored twice in the second period for Ajax, who secured a place in next season's Champions League as a result. PSV Eindhoven will, therefore, miss out on Europe's elite club competition next season but they finished their home campaign with a 3-1 defeat of FC Groningen. Tim Matavz gave Groningen a shock early lead but PSV turned it round with a Zakaria Labyad brace either side of a Balazs Dzsudzsak effort. Elsewhere, AZ Alkmaar gave their hopes of playing in Europe next season a huge shot in the arm with a 3-0 win at lowly Willem II. Hector Moreno, Brett Holman and Mounir El Hamdaoui scored the goals as reigning champions AZ moved into fourth place in the standings at the expense of Feyenoord. Defeat for second-bottom Willem II confirms their involvement in the end-of-season relegation play-offs alongside third-bottom Sparta Rotterdam. Sparta were beaten 3-0 by FC Utrecht - Jacob Lensky, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Erixon Danso netting - while ADO Den Haag made sure of their place in the Eredivisie next season with a 4-0 defeat of already relegated RKC Waalwijk. A stunning performance by Roda JC saw them triumph 5-2 at Vitesse Arnhem despite a brave fightback from the hosts. A brace from Willem Janssen and Morten Skoubo's strike saw Roda race into a three-goal lead by the half-hour mark but Vitesse threatened a remarkable comeback with goals from Onur Kaya and Alexander Buttner either side of the break. However, Mads Junker's double ensured Roda emerged with all three points. Two Ruud Boymans headers earned VVV-Venlo a 2-0 victory as they gave a fitting send-off to the long-serving Sjors Verdellen against NEC Nijmegen. Defender Verdellen was making the 317th appearance, and last in front of the home fans, after a 10-year spell with the club. He played his part in a comfortable clean sheet as his side moved within a point of their opponents in the Eredivisie table - and clear of any lingering relegation trouble. Heerenveen were left to rue Gerald Sibon's missed penalty as they failed to overcome 10-man NAC Breda in a tedious game at the Abe Lenstra Stadion. Jelle ten Rouwelaar pulled off a fine save to deny Sibon in the 75th minute after Robbert Schilder fouled Roy Beerens. Schilder was sent off for the challenge. The result leaves NAC still in the hunt for a place in the Europa League play-offs but there was little in the way of spectacle as both teams seemed content to sit back.
