McClaren wins title with Twente
Bryan Ruiz and on-loan Chelsea midfielder Miroslav Stoch were the men on target in either half - the opener arriving just seconds after NAC midfielder Csaba Feher had been sent off. The result ensured McClaren's side finished one point clear of Martin Jol's Ajax, who were 4-1 winners at NEC Nijmegen today. Jol's side finished the campaign with a goal difference of +86 - 46 better than Twente's - but had to settle for second place and a Champions League qualifying berth. Luis Suarez started and finished the scoring for Ajax in their rout of NEC, with Demy De Zeeuw and Marko Pantelic also notching in the first half. But the Amsterdammers' destiny was out of their own hands and NAC never looked like causing the upset they required to leapfrog Twente at the summit - particularly after Feher's dismissal. The Hungarian saw red for a two-footed lunge on Theo Janssen after 22 minutes, and moments later Ruiz put Twente a goal up. Stoch gave the Enschede outfit some breathing space with a second goal 16 minutes from time, rendering Ajax's goalscoring exploits in vain. The outcome secured Twente a first title since the club was formed in 1965 by the merger of Sportclub Enschede and Enschedese Boys and ensured former England manager McClaren, who took up the reins in summer 2008, went one better after guiding the club to second place in his first season at the helm.
