Maracana stadium has opened to the public as construction work continues for the 2014 World Cup and next year's Confederations Cup.

Beginning Saturday, visitors are being allowed to watch the renovation at the stadium, which will host the World Cup final in two years.

Construction is expected to be completed by February 2013 ahead of the Confederations Cup. Organizers say work is 45 percent complete.

The main change is the addition of a roof over the seating area. The renovation cost is estimated at $480 million.
