Manchester City Women: 2016 Championship Secured!

The Manchester City Women completed a historical season in league play, claiming their first ever FA WSL 1 title, defeating Chelsea 2-0.
The 2015 was promising, but ultimately left the side asking what if? A second place finish in the league earned a spot in the 16/17 Champions League, but losses to Chelsea and Arsenal in the FA and WSL Cups were tough to take. Manchester City jumped out to a strong start for the 2016 season with six straight victories, including a combined 4-0 total over Chelsea and Arsenal.
On Sunday, in front of a record crowd of 4, 096 at the Academy Stadium, Manchester City wrapped up their first league title. Jill Scott and Toni Duggan both scored on each side of halftime as the Blues topped Chelsea for the second time this year 2-0.
Though a few chances were missed, the side dominated the match from start to finish. The lineup remained unchanged from the side that defeated Arsenal 1-0 two weeks ago.
Plenty More To Play For

Manchester City’s season isn’t complete yet. The side still have two matches left and something to earn in both games. Up first is the WSL Cup Final against Birmingham City on October 2nd. After topping Arsenal 1-0, City have the chance to claim their 2nd ever Cup title. The match will be played in Manchester and they will be the favorites to complete the double.
After clinching the title City will be riding a wave into the Cup final and should handle Birmingham on their way to more than just a double. The two sides will meet a second time in October on the 30th to close out the WSL season. City have gone unbeaten in league play all year, and could close out an undefeated (Invincible) season.
Drawing only twice this year, Manchester City have been truly impressive. The club has a chance to complete a historic double, but also continue forward into Europe. Next month the 2016/17 Women’s Champions League returns to action.
