Manchester City kept Juventus winless in the Europa League by holding the Italian visitors to a 1-1 draw in Group A on Thursday.

Vincenzo Iaquinta beat City goalkeeper Joe Hart after just 10 minutes, but Adam Johnson leveled for the big-spending Premier League side before halftime.

"I've been working on it a bit in training, running across defenders. The manager (Roberto Mancini) wants me to do it more," Johnson said. "It was a great pass by Yaya Toure, my first touch took it away from the goalkeeper and I thought I might need another."

Alessandro Del Piero thought he had won the game for Juventus in the closing minutes when his free kick bounced down from the underside of the bar. He thought the ball had gone over the line, but referee Eduardo Gonzalez correctly ruled that it hadn't.

"Italian sides obviously defend well but I think we were the better team," Johnson said. "In the second half they were pegged in their own half for most of it, I think we should have won the game.

"We want to win every competition we play. We won our last game (against Chelsea in the Premier League) and hopefully we can continue strongly in this competition."

But City struggled to provide much attacking threat for large spells, with striker Emmanuel Adebayor on poor form.

Juventus, though, pressed from the start, with Iaquinta firing from 25 yards (meters) but Hart got down quickly to turn the ball around the post.

Hart had to be alert again three minutes later when Del Piero tried his luck from distance with a free kick.

But the England goalkeeper was beaten when, with Jerome Boateng backing off, Iaquinta cut inside from the left before unleashing a shot into the corner.

Carlos Tevez looked for a leveler, but his 20th-minute strike went wide of Alex Manninger's goal.

A header from Gareth Barry beat Manninger, but hit the post and the former Arsenal goalkeeper reacted quickly to block Johnson's effort from the rebound.

But Johnson did level in the 37th when Yaya Toure's pass split the Juventus defense and the England winger showed good vision to race in from the right and sweep the ball home from inside the area.

Johnson was denied a winner at the start of the second half by Manninger's body, while Del Piero also saw a free kick go just wide of the post.
