Defender Moses Chavula scored with a 19th-minute free kick to give Malawi a 1-0 home win over Togo in their African Cup of Nations qualifying match on Saturday.
Chavula's first-half goal settled things at Kamuzu Stadium and moved Malawi up to second in Group K after five games.
Malawi survived an early scare when James Sangala's handball gave the visiting Togolese a fourth-minute penalty. But Anewah Kondzu's spot kick was saved by Malawi goalkeeper Simplex Nthala, who dived low to his right to push the ball away.
Malawi moved above former African champion Tunisia with the two battling for the second qualifying spot in the group. Group leader Botswana has already qualified following a 1-0 win over Chad on Saturday.
