Makaay chasing Dutch Cup glory

Martin Jol's visitors head into the return leg at De Kuip as clear favourites to go on and lift the trophy after an early Siem de Jong brace secured a 2-0 win in the first meeting at the Amsterdam ArenA 10 days ago. But with a passionate home support at their backs, Feyenoord have high hopes of turning the tables on Thursday night. Former Holland international Makaay will retire at the end of the season and bowed out of the Eredivisie with a hat-trick in the final-day demolition of Heerenveen at the weekend, and Been has backed the 35-year old to perform similar exploits on Thursday. "Roy will be part of the starting 11 in the match against Ajax," said Feyenoord coach Mario Been. "We need to score at least two goals to overturn the defeat from the first leg and I think he could be the one to help us to success. "I'm confident that the home crowd will give him another standing ovation if he scores three goals on Thursday." The final was switched to a two-legged affair when it was confirmed Feyenoord and Ajax - two teams with a history of violent clashes between their fans - would be going head to head. Away fans have been banned from attending both legs, meaning the advantage now switches to Feyenoord, who can expect typically robust backing from the De Kuip faithful. And Been is eager to heap even more pressure on Ajax by snatching an early goal. "It would be great if we could get an early goal, then we have enough time to grab a second," he said. "If a full stadium is behind us, then crazy things can happen on Thursday." Ajax go into the game desperate to end the season with some silverware after suffering the agony of losing out in the Eredivisie title race to FC Twente at the weekend. The Amsterdammers missed out on the league crown by one point despite a remarkable campaign that saw then score 106 times and end with a goal difference of plus 86. Midfielder Demy de Zeeuw conceded there was some frustration in the Ajax camp, but revealed spirits remain high after a run of 14 straight league victories. "There's a peaceful atmosphere in the club," he said. "Moreover, this year we played clear, good football with many of our own young players. Those are areas where the club excels. "Our squad consists of good players who all want to put in the work. "This will hopefully be rewarded on Thursday with the KNVB Cup."
