Australia captain Lucas Neill has signed with Omiya Ardija of Japan's J-League.

The 35-year-old defender has been without a club since the end of the A-League season when he completed a short-term deal with Sydney FC.

Details of Neill's contract were not released, although he has already started training with the team.

''I'm very excited to join Omiya,'' Neill said in a statement on the team's website.

''I hope I can become Ardija's strength with my passionate playing style and strong will to win,'' he said. ''I want to use my experience to help my team achieve its goals.''

Neill played just three games with Sydney FC, his last a 1-1 draw with Western Sydney in late March.

Neill spent almost 15 years of his career playing in England and also had stints with Turkish side Galatasaray, and Al Jazira and Al Wasl in the United Arab Emirates.

Omiya finished 13th in the 2012 J-League season and were surprise leaders in the first half of this season, but have fallen to fifth place after six straight defeats.

The team fired Slovenian manager Zdenko Verdenik last week and replaced him with Takeyuki Okamoto.
