Losing cup finalists to lose Europa League entry

UEFA wants to deny losing national cup finalists a Europa League entry, making it harder for lower-tier clubs to qualify.

Clubs losing a cup final against an opponent which also qualifies for the Champions League should not take the Europa League place, UEFA said Friday.

Instead, the Europa League entry should go to the next best team in the standings.

UEFA's executive committee has asked its club competitions panel to update the rule from 2015.

In other decisions, UEFA allocated Gibraltar one entry for its clubs in qualifying for the Champions League and Europa League next season, after the 54th national member joined the European body in May.

UEFA also brought forward the 2014 Super Cup date, which pairs the winners of the two European club competitions.

The 2014 match will be played on Aug. 12 in Wales at Cardiff City's stadium.

Bayern Munich beat Chelsea on Aug. 30 in the latest edition held in Czech Republic capital Prague.
