Liverpool canceled its first visit to South Africa in 19 years on Friday after the local league blocked a game against Ajax Cape Town because it would fall within the South African season.

Liverpool was due to play at Cape Town Stadium on May 21, but South Africa's Premier Soccer League said Ajax couldn't take part in the fixture because the season doesn't end until the weekend afterward.

The English Premier League team says ''we are hugely disappointed that we are unable to visit and the team cannot play in front of our terrific supporters.''

The PSL told The Associated Press this week that the game could have gone ahead after the season-ending Nedbank Cup final on May 25 but not beforehand out of respect to local sponsors.
