Liverpool reaches knockout stage
Liverpool advanced to the Europa League knockout round despite conceding a 1-1 draw with Steaua Bucharest on Thursday.
A header in the 19th minute by Liverpool's Milan Jovanovic was matched by a header from Eder Bonfim with half an hour to go.
Liverpool was assured of topping Group K with a game to spare. After five games, Liverpool was unbeaten with 11 points. Steaua had 6, and Napoli and Utrecht had 4 each, leaving all three still in contention for the second and final berth from the group from the last rotation on Dec. 15.
Steaua started strongly but was taken by surprise by Jovanovic, who headed in a pass from Ryan Babel and beat Steaua goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.
Steaua came back with an unexpected goal on the hour courtesy of Bonfim, who was set up by Stanislov Angelov, and Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Manuel Reina, who dropped the ball, which slipped through his fingers and legs and trickled over the line.
"We did what we wanted with Liverpool tonight," said Steaua owner Gigi Becali.
Three minutes before Liverpool's goal in the first half, Steaua had its first chance when Eric Bicfalvi headed a ball over the crossbar.
In the 42nd, Bicfalvi missed another chance, and in the 45th Bogdan Stancu's close shot shaved the left post.
In the 66th, Liverpool missed a chance when Sotiros Kyrgiakos hit the bar.
Liverpool was without key players Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Raul Meireles, as well as injured duo Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
Liverpool defeated Steaua 4-1 in the first match between the teams.
