Lionel Messi has signed a new contract with Barcelona, the Catalan giants have announced.
Barca revealed that an agreement over a new deal had been reached on Friday and, while no details were disclosed, the Argentinian officially put pen to paper on Monday.
"FC Barcelona would like to announce that Leo Messi and the club signed a revised contract this afternoon," said a statement on the Barca's official website.
"The signing took place in the presence of Leo Messi, his father Jorge Messi and the club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, as well as the sporting vice-president Jordi Mestre and the club CEO, Antoni Rossich.
"During the signing, which was made in the presidential box at the Camp Nou, Leo Messi repeatedly expressed his excitement about the new deal."
The deal follows lengthy negotiations during which it was reported that the 26-year-old wanted to surpass Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo as the best-paid player in the world.
According to a reports in Spain, the new contract is worth a record 20million euros per season (£16.3million) and ties Messi to the club until 2018.
Messi scored 28 goals in 31 league appearances as Barca finished second in the Primera Division and netted 41 in all competitions this season.
In all the Argentinian has scored 354 goals in 425 official matches for Barca and is the highest scorer in the club's history.
The new contract will see him move into a second decade with the club, having come through the ranks to make his debut during the 2004/05 season.
He has gone on to win six league titles, three Champions League crowns, two Copa del Reys, two Club World Cups and two European Super Cups.
Securing Messi's future is a major piece of business for Barca as they shape up for a crucial summer.
The club were hit with a one-year transfer ban for violations of the rules on signing minors earlier this year. That ban has been suspended on appeal, and Barca need to make a series of moves this summer in order to guard against the possibility that it is reinstated in full for both the winter transfer window and next summer.
