Lille captain Rio Mavuba has undergone knee surgery and faces up to three months out of action.

The midfielder had the operation Monday after a meniscus problem in his left knee was diagnosed when injured while playing against Rennes at the end of September.

His club says the operation went well but he is still expected to be sidelined for between six weeks and three months.

Mavuba had only recently broken back into the France team under new coach Didier Deschamps.
