Leicester City have announced the squad that will be travelling across Europe to play in domestic football’s biggest competition.

The foxes will be joined by Porto, Club Brugge and Copenhagen in Group G as they continue their quest for success, this time, the Champions League is the target.

Leicester city begin their journey as they travel to Belgium to face Club Brugge on the 14th of September.

Here you’ll find the 24 man squad that foxes boss Claudio Ranieri will be taking, so lets get started.

Goalkeepers

1. Kasper Schmeichel

12. Ben Hamer

21. Ron-Robert Zieler

Who will start in goal for Leicester City is still up in the air. Both Kasper Schmeichel and Ron-Robert Zieler are more than capable goalkeepers.

As Kasper has started each league game so far, despite coming off during the second half of the Swansea clash, this points to Zieler being Claudio Ranieri’s number 1 man for Europe.

Ben Hamer is an unlikely starter for the foxes after being loaned last season. He’s in the squad as a precaution against freak injuries to Schmeichel and Zieler.

Defenders

2 Luis Hernandez

3 Ben Chilwell

5 Wes Morgan

6 Robert Huth

17 Danny Simpson

27 Marcin Wasilewski

28 Christian Fuchs

No surprises in the defence department either as Claudio Ranieri selects his best options to hold out the Porto, Copenhagen and Brugge attacks.

A likely backline for the foxes in Europe would be a back 4 consisting of Simpson, Morgan, Huth and Fuchs.

Ben Chilwell however may be given the nod ahead of Fuchs in order to keep the Austrian fresh for the league.

An interesting note to take from this list is the lack of depth in the right-back position, although Daniel Amartey can be deployed at right-back should an injury see Simpson unfit to play.

Midfielders

More from Foxes of Leicester

    4 Danny Drinkwater

    7 Ahmed Musa

    10 Andy King

    11 Marc Albrighton

    13 Daniel Amartey

    14 Bartosz Kapustka

    20 Shinji Okazaki

    24 Nampalys Mendy

This is where things get a little strange.

As you may note, the UEFA website lists both Musa and Okazaki as midfielders, despite predominantly playing in a forwards role.

Other than those two outliers, we’d expect Drinkwater and Mendy to start in the middle of the pitch, perhaps Daniel Amartey if he continues to play as he did against Swansea.

Club veteran Andy King is another option in the middle, for a more attack minded approach to the game.

Foxes fans will be hoping to see Kapustka feature sometime soon to get real minutes under his belt in a Leicester City shirt.

Missing from the list is Matty James who is finally fit again after a nasty injury during the 14/15 season as Leicester narrowly escaped relegation.

His absence is not surprising as he missed the whole of the foxes’ miraculous title winning season.

    Attackers

    9 Jamie Vardy

    15 Jeff Schlupp

    19 Islam Slimani

    22 Demarai Gray

    23 Leonardo Ulloa

    26 Riyad Mahrez

Up front we’ll be expecting to see club record signing Islam Slimani pairing up with Leicester City talisman Jamie Vardy.

Wingers Schlupp, Gray and Mahrez have all been included in the attackers section of the UEFA website despite having Musa and Okazaki in the Midfielders section.

Ulloa coming off of the bench will be a handy addition however with Musa, Slimani and Vardy all ahead of him, his chances of European football may be slim.

This is the chance for Leicester City’s star players Jamie Vardy and ‘PFA Player of The Year’ Riyad Mahrez to shine on the biggest club stage in the world after turning down big money moves in this summers transfer window.
