Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been banned for three matches following his sending-off last weekend for stepping on an opponent's foot, the Germany Football Federation said Wednesday.

The 40-year-old former Germany and Arsenal keeper was shown the red card close to the end of Sunday's Bundesliga match at Mainz for stepping on the foot of striker Aristide Bance.

The resulting 90th-minute penalty gave Mainz a 1-1 draw and spoiled new Stuttgart coach Christian Gross' league debut.

Stuttgart says Lehmann, who strained a knee ligament during the incident, had since apologized to his teammates.
