Lecce were relegated to Serie B after ending the season with a 1-0 defeat at Chievo.

Only a win would have given Serse Cosmi's side any chance of staying in Serie A next season, but even then, they were reliant on Genoa losing at home to Palermo.

With Genoa winning their match, Lecce ended Chievo's spirited battle at the Stadio Bentegodi with a goal from Kamil Vacek in the 78th minute sealing their demise.

Moris Carrozzieri was then shown a straight red card in the 81st minute as Lecce's survival bid disappeared.

Knowing only a victory would do, Lecce started brightly as they sought a goal that would have put Genoa under pressure.

By gambling, however, they left gaps at the back and Gennaro Sardo almost capitalised when he hit the post in the 21st minute.

Lecce could not just play a defensive game, though, and they continued to attack with David Di Michele going close to putting them in front 10 minutes before the break.

Christian Puggioni pushed his shot behind with Guillermo Giacomazzi then forcing the Chievo goalkeeper into yet another good save from the resulting corner.

Four minutes later, Di Michele missed the target as Lecce continued to push.

Puggioni denied Andrea Bertolacci early in the second half, but with the news arriving that Genoa had taken the lead, the visitors seemed to lose belief.

Vacek sent a shot over the crossbar as Chievo started to gain the upper hand, and the home side took the lead 12 minutes from time.

Alberto Paloschi set up Vacek, who scored his first goal in Serie A with a good shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Carrozzieri was given his marching orders three minutes later for a bad foul on Cyril Thereau.

Paloschi and Sergio Pellissier both missed chances to make it an even more comfortable win for the Flying Donkeys as Lecce showed resignation as the clock ticked down.
