Kean refuses to criticise referee

A series of controversial decisions at Craven Cottage thrust Clattenburg back under the spotlight with his decision to award a match-winning penalty the most contentious. Bobby Zamora rifled home the 90th-minute spot-kick after Clattenburg decided Grant Hanley had held back Aaron Hughes at a corner. Fulham manager Mark Hughes felt the official could have awarded his side a penalty moments earlier and also in the first half, when Christopher Samba hacked down Andy Johnson. Clattenburg's latest performance comes just a week after he was heavily criticised for failing to show Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney a red card against Wigan. Kean said: "I've asked Mark for his take on the penalty incident and he said that Grant Hanley had both hands around Aaron Hughes. "He felt it was an aggressive bit of play and that's why he gave the penalty. "I've looked at the images myself again and think that technically he was right, there was a bit of contact, but I said to him that if you go on that you'd have to give 10 penalties every game. "It's his interpretation of the initial incident and I have to respect that. We respect his decision. Referees have the hardest job in the world. "Even if we'd finished with a point from this game we'd have been disappointed." Kean would like to see referees publicly explain their decisions after a match. He said: "It would be good for the game if referees could come in and answer questions. "I can sit here and Mark Hughes can give his account, but probably referees need to open up. "If everyone can understand the reason why they do give these things, grey areas can be cleared up." Kean is undecided whether Clattenburg should be temporarily stood down from duty to remove him from the spotlight. He said: "He's in a tough position because he's had a number of decisions to make and the spotlight's on him. "I don't know if taking him out of the firing line is an option or if it would make it even worse. "Would it then intensify the pressure on him when he comes back?" Blackburn full-back Gael Givet was shown a red card after the final whistle following a fractious finish to the match. Kean said: "I didn't even know Givet had been sent off. Mark said Gael had run at him in an aggressive manner so he had to be sent off. "I've not seen any footage of that and I've not spoken with Gael, but we'll address it if that's correct." Hughes had his own complaints with decisions made by Clattenburg. He said: "I'm sure Steve will have a view on the penalty at the end, but we should have a had a penalty just before it anyway "There were a number of situations where key decisions should have gone our way. I'm sure Steve will think the same. "We're dubious about their second goal because we felt Jason Roberts had handled just before hooking the ball back into play." Twice Damien Duff gave Fulham the lead with a pair of sweetly-struck goals, lifting his tally for the season to five, but twice Blackburn struck back, through Hanley and then Junior Hoillet. Hughes said: "It was great for Bobby. I thought he was excellent when he came on and showed real character and leadership to grab the ball and dispatch the penalty. We're delighted for him."
