Juventus has high hopes after complete overhaul
Following one of its worst seasons in recent memory, Juventus has undertaken a complete overhaul entering the new Serie A campaign.
New coach Luigi Delneri and director general Giuseppe Marotta have been lured from Sampdoria, while Andrea Agnelli has replaced Jean-Claude Blanc as club president.
Juventus finished seventh last season, a distant 27 points behind champion Inter Milan, was eliminated from the group phase of the Champions League and also exited the Europa League and Italian Cup at early stages.
The new management team has spent more money in the offseason transfer market than any other Italian club - more than ?50 million ($60 million) - on eight new players.
The new arrivals include goalkeeper Marco Storari (from Sampdoria), defenders Leonardo Bonucci (Bari) and Marco Motta (AS Roma), midfielders Milos Krasic (CSKA Moscow) and Alberto Aquilani (on loan from Liverpool) and forward Simone Pepe (Udinese).
Gone are defender Fabio Cannavaro and midfielders Christian Poulsen and Sebastian Giovinco.
Storari is a key addition since goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is expected to miss the first few months of the season following lower back surgery, although Alex Manninger is also still an option.
Forward Diego stayed in Turin despite speculation he might return to Germany following a difficult first season with Juventus.
Another forward, Vincenzo Iaquinta, begins the season with a nagging injury, leaving the attack to Diego, Amauri, Pepe and 35-year-old captain Alessandro Del Piero - with David Trezeguet still hanging around as well.
Finishing seventh last season meant that Juventus had to start qualifying for the Europa League in July.
By the time Juve opens Serie A at Bari on Sunday it will have already played four games in Europe.
''We're in good form but we've got to get into top form real fast, because everyone wants to beat Juve,'' Delneri said.
After missing out on this season's Champions League, Juve is aiming for a top-four finish to qualify for the top club competition next season - when the club is scheduled to open its new stadium.
