Jones set for midfield role
United must avoid defeat in Switzerland on Wednesday to secure progress to the last 16 and Ferguson is short on central midfield options. Michael Carrick is suspended, while Anderson and Tom Cleverley are injured, so England international Jones could be given another run-out in a holding position. Jones started in midfield in Saturday's game at Aston Villa, and scored the only goal, and the teenager is now in line for a key role against Basel. Versatile "Phil's a natural centre-back, but the boy is so versatile we can play him in midfield too," said United boss Ferguson. "We have not got Michael Carrick on Wednesday in the Champions League because he's suspended, so we wanted to have another look at Phil." The Red Devils were held to a shock 3-3 draw at home by Basel earlier in the group stage and Ferguson is hoping his side will not be left to rue that slip-up. He added: "We have got the players to get us through, there's no question about that. "We're going to have to perform. It will not be an easy game, although over the last four years our form away from home in Europe has been fantastic. "Our casualness against Basel at Old Trafford could cost us."
