Jagielka leads Everton past Newcastle 2-1

Defender Phil Jagielka scored his first goal of the season as Everton put its midweek FA Cup nightmare behind it to beat Newcastle 2-1 in the Premier League.

Jagielka scored close range off the underside of the crossbar after a free kick from Leighton Baines in the 36th minute.

Newcastle had taken a 23rd-minute lead in the mid-table match through Leon Best's close-range header - his sixth goal of the season.

Leon Osman equalized in the 31st from just outside the penalty area.

Everton was eliminated from the FA Cup on Tuesday after losing 1-0 to second-tier side Reading in the fifth round.
