Former Aston Villa manager John Gregory has been appointed coach of struggling Israeli team Maccabi Ahi Nazareth.

The 55-year-old replaces coach Eli Mahpud, who left the club Tuesday after his team lost nine of its first 12 matches following promotion to the top league last season. The club from the north of Israel is currently last in the Israeli league with nine points.

Gregory said at a news conference that "I am very happy to be here. I know I have come in at probably the most difficult time."

Gregory led Aston Villa into the UEFA Cup in 1998 but has not worked in professional football since being fired by Queens Park Rangers in October 2007. His first game as coach will be at home against Beitar Jerusalem on Saturday.
