Bayern Munich says Argentina defender Martin Demichelis will be out for three weeks after suffering facial injuries during his country's friendly against Germany.

Bayern said Thursday that Demichelis underwent surgery in Munich overnight after his cheekbone and upper jaw were fractured.

He sustained the injuries when he was hit accidentally in the face on Wednesday by the knee of Germany captain Michael Ballack.

Bayern said Demichelis will have to remain in hospital for two or three days and then rest for two weeks before he can resume training.

The club said the 29-year-old could, if his recovery goes well, be fit for Bayern's German Cup semifinal against Schalke on March 24.
