Mark Hughes has stepped down as Fulham manager after a season in charge, and is widely expected to take over at Premier League rival Aston Villa.

Hughes replaced Roy Hodgson last July and led Fulham to eighth in the Premier League in his first season.

Aston Villa is looking for a new manager after Frenchman Gerard Houllier was forced to leave on Wednesday after only ninth months because of health problems.

Hughes said in a statement on Thursday that his decision to leave Fulham was not influenced by another club.
