Peru, which finished last in South American qualifying, went ahead on an own goal in the 40th minute when the Catrachos' Emilio Izaguirre inadvertently headed a centering pass by Peru's Damian Ismodes into his own net.

David Suazo tied the score in the 47th with an uncontested shot from near the 6-yard box after receiving Danilo Turcios' pass and dribbling deep into the penalty area. Suazo eluded goalkeeper Leao Butron, who came out to cut down the angle.

Rengifo scored the tiebreaking goal off a pass from Ismodes, beating goalkeeper Noel Valladares with a 10-yard header.

A pro-Honduras crowd of 11,917 attended the match at Land Shark Stadium. The Catrachos are preparing for their first World Cup appearance since 1982.
