Pride in their team and country outweighed any disappointment for the fans of South Africa, who watched their national team play to a 1-1 draw with Mexico in the opening match of the World Cup.

Johannesburg native Sandra Celestino says that the world ``will have been amazed and proud of South Africa.''

A goal by Siphiwe Tshabalala came after an exuberant opening ceremony at Soccer City. And even Mexico's late equalizer could not tarnish a day when South Africa sparkled.

Ntsika Bengu, from Mpumalanga province, said the world ``will have seen what we are made of.''
