Hoffenheim has signed Argentine defender David Abraham from the Spanish club Getafe, while kicking out Marvin Compper from the squad.

Compper became the first Hoffenheim player to play for Germany, in a 2-1 loss to England in 2008. He never played again for Joachim Loew's team. Hoffenheim's director Andreas Mueller says Compper told the club he could not motivate himself for the struggle against relegation and was sent to the reserve side.

Abraham received a 3 1/2-year contract.

Hoffenheim is 16th in the Bundesliga, a place that means a relegation playoff at the end of the season.
