Mexico coach Miguel Herrera revealed that Javier “Chicharito” Hernández could have played at Copa América 2015.
With El Tri also competing at the Gold Cup this summer, the 47-year-old opted to omit the Manchester United forward from the Chile tournament, along with other high-profile names like Carlos Vela and Andrés Guardado in order to use them in CONCACAF's regional competition.
Mexico was eliminated from the Copa after picking up only two points from Group A, but Herrera has now admitted that there was no clear chain of command to get permission to feature players across both competitions.
“We didn’t know who to talk to in order to ask for Chicharito to play at either the Copa América or the Gold Cup,” he said at a press conference in Orlando.
“We would love to have had Chicharito with us, but the ‘what might have been’ doesn’t exist.”
Mexico began its Copa campaign with a goalless draw against Bolivia, then split points again with Chile in a 3-3 result, before falling 2-1 to Ecuador, which ended its qualification hopes.
