Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has joined Hamburg of the German league, ending a 3 1/2-year stay with Real Madrid.
Hamburg said Saturday he signed through the 2010-11 season.
Van Nistelrooy has struggled to find playing time with Real Madrid this season. He announced his retirement from international play after the 2008 European Championship. Now, he hopes this latest move can help him earn a spot on the Netherlands team for this year's World Cup.
Van Nistelrooy was one of Europe's top goal scorers for much of the last decade. But the 33-year-old Dutchman has just one goal from four appearances this season.
