Hamburg a step closer to home final
Mladen Petric's two first-half goals led Hamburger SV to a 3-1 victory over Standard Liege and into the semifinals of the Europa League on Thursday.
Hamburg had already won the first leg 2-1 last week and the 5-2 aggregate victory kept it on course to play the final at its own Hamburg Arena on May 12.
Hamburg's Paolo Guerrero, who was banned for five Bundesliga matches for throwing a drink bottle at a fan, scored the third deep in second-half injury time. Standard got its only goal from Igor De Camargo.
Petric scored his first in the 19th minute when a deflected cross from Ze Roberto darted into the goalmouth. He found himself totally unmarked and simply headed past goalkeeper Sinan Bolat through the center.
De Camargo briefly gave Standard hope again, when he swooped in from the edge of offside to head home a free kick for the equalizer in the 32nd.
It only made Petric's second goal two minutes later all the more stunning. Again he met a looping cross from the left, this time from Dennis Aogo. The ball flew behind him and, turning back, he produced a perfect overhead bicycle kick from the edge of the box to score the decider. By the time Guerrero scored, the outcome was already beyond doubt.
Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia needed the victory after a series of disappointing Bundesliga results left his side in sixth place.
The game effectively finished the season for outgoing champion Standard Liege. It already failed to make the playoffs for the Belgian title.
The game at the 30,000-capacity Sclessin Stadium was marred when a linesman was hit by a cigarette lighter thrown from the crowd, delaying the game for several minutes late in the first half.
