American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann has been dropped as Wolverhampton Wanderers' starter.

Wayne Hennessey took over for Saturday's home match against Sunderland, which Wolves won 3-2 for only its third victory of the Premier League season.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, whose side is 19th in the 20-team league, says the 38-year-old Hahnemann will stay on the bench for Saturday's match at Blackburn.

''Marcus has been brilliant and a terrific influence for us last year,'' McCarthy said. ''I just thought it was time to give Wayne a chance ... He has to be given another chance.''

McCarthy said Hahnemann, who has eight appearances for the U.S. national team, took the decision well.

''There was no problem with Marcus after my decision - he was terrific and he's supported Wayne,'' McCarthy said.

''We haven't had a clean sheet and we haven't won games so I decided to change it. I think my decision was justified because Wayne played very well.''

In 14 matches in the league this season, Hahnemann has allowed 25 goals and hasn't kept a clean sheet.
