Gyan is available for the first time since completing his £13million-plus switch from French club Rennes, although Steve Bruce is yet to decide on whether to start him or not. If Gyan is thrown straight in, he could replace Fraizer Campbell, who will undergo surgery to repair his damaged cruciate ligament next Friday before embarking on a six-month period of rehabilitation. Nedum Onuoha is available again after being ineligible for the 1-0 win over parent club Manchester City and John Mensah (hamstring) is fit, while both Andy Reid and George McCartney have two reserve games under their belt and return to contention. But Michael Turner (ankle) could be sidelined for several weeks and Craig Gordon (broken arm) and David Meyler (knee) remain on the sidelines. Black Cats (from): Mignolet, Carson, Onuoha, Bardsley, Richardson, Ferdinand, McCartney, Angeleri, Mensah, Bramble, Da Silva, Cattermole, Riveros, Henderson, Malbranque, Elmohamady, Zenden, Colback, Reid, Bent, Gyan, Welbeck.
