Hamburg striker Paolo Guerrero was banned Thursday for five matches
for throwing a drink bottle at a fan.
Unless Hamburg launches a successful appeal, the ban
effectively ends Guerrero's season. There are five rounds left in
the Bundesliga.
The German football federation fined the Peru international
€20,000 ($26,700). Hamburg has also imposed an undisclosed
club-record fine on Guerrero.
The incident happened after Hamburg's draw with Hannover on
Sunday as the players were leaving the field to the jeers of home
fans.
Guerrero aimed a full plastic drink bottle at a fan and hit
him on the shoulder. The fan reportedly shouted "Go back to Peru!"
Guerrero has apologized for the incident and said he would
personally speak with the fan.
Hamburg prosecutors also are looking into the incident.
