The vice president of Deportivo Xinabajul in Guatemala has been shot to death by unidentified gunmen after receiving threats related to the squad's poor performance.

National Civil Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez says no suspects have yet been detained in the killing of Carlos Noe Gomez.

Prosecutor Nery Martinez says the investigation is focused on threats Gomez had reported receiving several weeks ago.

Xinabajul is at the bottom of the rankings in the country's national league, and lost a home match 2-0 against Suchitepequez this week.

Gonzalez said Saturday that Gomez was killed late Friday as he left a team planning meeting in the northern province of Huehuetenango.
