Matt Derbyshire came off the bench Sunday to score a second-half
goal as defending champion Olympiakos won 1-0 at Panathinaikos in
the Greek league.
Derbyshire scored from close range in the 67th minute after
his initial header from Lomana LuaLua's cross was saved by
goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas. The English striker had replaced
Yiannis Papadopoulos in the 55th.
Three rounds before the end of the season, Panathinaikos
remains on top of the standings with 61 points, four more than
Olympiakos and five more than PAOK, which lost 1-0 at home to AEK
Athens.
Also Sunday, it was: Panionios 1, Aris 1; Ergotelis 1,
Iraklis 3; Levadiakos 2, Panthrakikos 0; Kavala 3, Larissa 3;
Giannena 1, Atromitos 0 and Xanthi 2, Asteras 0.
Olympiakos had the first scoring chance in the sixth minute
when Tzorvas pushed Vassilis Torosidis' shot over the crossbar.
Panathinaikos' Loukas Vyntra could not reach a cross by
Sebastian Leto in the 15th in a chance for the hosts.
A powerful free kick by Panathinaikos' Djibril Cisse sailed
over the bar before a shot by teammate Dimitris Salpingidis hit the
post in the 31st. Four minutes later, a header by Panathinaikos'
Gilberto Silva also hit the post.
Panathinaikos missed several chances in the remaining
minutes. The best came in the 71st when a shot by Cisse off a cross
by Gabriel hit the post.
Olympiakos' Costas Mitroglou hit the crossbar in the 83rd.
U.S. international Eddie Johnson scored an 11th-minute goal
for Aris, but Panionios leveled in the 80th through Davor Kukec.
Aris is fifth with 43 points, five behind fourth-place AEK.
