Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez will be out of action for seven weeks with a knee injury, the Serie A club has confirmed.

The Germany international suffered the problem in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

A statement from the club read: "The tests done on Mario Gomez confirmed a grade two tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

"The striker will wear a brace for two weeks before beginning a rehabilitation programme to bring him back up to match fitness gradually.

"The recovery period is expected to last six to seven weeks."

Gomez, who joined the Tuscan outfit on a 20million euros transfer deal from Bayern Munich this summer, is set to miss seven league games as well as three Europa League Group E encounters.

The 28-year-old forward could return to play in time for Fiorentina's home game against Napoli on October 30.

The good news for Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella is that Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado will only be out for three weeks.

Cuadrado dislocated his shoulder at the weekend but tests done ruled out any fracture.

Fiorentina host Portuguese side Pacos Ferreira on Thursday in their Europa League Group E opener before travelling to Bergamo to face Atalanta this weekend.
