Gijon edges closer to division drop
Goals from Miku and Diego Castro pushed Sporting Gijon ever closer to the Segunda Division as Getafe emerged victorious in a 2-0 win at the Alfonso Perez stadium.
Venezuelan forward Miku grabbed the first after 20 minutes and when the second arrived early in the second half there was no way back for Sporting, who have now failed to win any of their last five games and stay bottom of La Liga.
The home side made the brighter start and Sporting goalkeeper Juan Pablo kept out Jaime Gavilan's close-range header from a Pedro Rios cross after two minutes.
Ayoze tested Miguel Moya at the other end with a right-foot shot, and the Getafe goalkeeper was called on again in the 15th minute to hold on to Oscar Trejo's 20-yard effort.
The opening goal came just after the game had passed the 20 minute mark, as Gavilan's free-kick into the box was headed home by Miku for his 10th La Liga goal of the campaign.
Long-range efforts by Diego Castro and Pedro Rios failed to find the target and Alberto Lora's close-range header for Sporting was narrowly wide from an Adrian Colunga cross in the 34th minute.
Getafe forged the final two openings of the first period as first Pedro Rios teed up Juan Valera to shoot over the top, then did so himself in stoppage time.
The home side doubled their lead less than two minutes into the second half as another Gavilan ball in, this time from open play, caused the Asturians problems and Diego Castro volleyed home from close range.
Ivan Hernandez headed wide from Colunga's corner soon afterwards and Gavilan almost completed a hat-trick of assists when his free-kick fell to Michel, but his shot was smothered by Juan Pablo.
Trejo fired wide with 25 minutes to go as time began to run out for the visitors, and David Barral's 20-yard effort off target was as close as they came in the time that remained.
