The Swedish Football Association has banned Utrecht striker Alexander Gerndt from the national team after he was convicted of assaulting his former wife.

The association said Wednesday that Gerndt will be suspended ''until further notice.''

A Swedish court on Tuesday said the 25-year-old had intentionally struck his former wife on the thigh with a football during a game that turned violent and gripped her by the throat after she destroyed his computer. Both assaults left bruises on the victim.

Gerndt pleaded not guilty, and hasn't yet decided if he will appeal.

The association chairman's Lars-Ake Lagrell said that assault convictions are not acceptable. But he added that its decision may be reviewed if new facts appear.
