Lukas Podolski and captain Michael Ballack scored in the first half and Germany held on to edge Russia 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match Saturday.
Podolski collected a pass from Miroslav Klose, shook off central defender Vasily Berezutskiy and drove his shot past Igor Akinfeev to give Germany the lead after nine minutes.
