Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been given an eight-week sentence - suspended for a year - for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The 1990 World Cup star was more than four times above the legal alcohol limit when he was stopped by police in a suburb of Newcastle on Oct. 8.

Gascoigne was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to undergo alcohol abuse treatment when he appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

District Judge Stephen Earl had warned Gascoigne that 12 weeks in jail was a possibility.
