The Ghana Football Association says former national team captain and African Cup winner Emmanuel Quarshie has died. He was 59.

Also paying tribute, the Confederation of African Football said the ''Ghana legend'' and 1982 Cup of Nations winner had been battling throat cancer.

Quarshie led a Ghana team containing the great Abedi Pele to the nation's fourth continental title in Libya in 1982, the last time the Black Stars were crowned African champions. The forward played club football in Ghana, Egypt and Saudi Arabia before returning to coach in his home country.

The GFA said ''Quarshie was one of the game's great servants'' and had died at his home in Ghana on Monday morning.

CAF also recognized Quarshie's ''influential role'' in Egyptian club Zamalek's African Champions League triumph in 1984.
