Figueirense and Sao Paulo boosted their chase for the Campeonato summit as third-placed Fluminense suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to America MG.

Struggling America lifted themselves off the foot of the table thanks to goals from Kempes six minutes before half-time and Alessandro in the 79th minute, with Rafael Moura pulling one back three minutes later.

That allowed Figueirense to move level on points with Flu thanks to a 2-1 comeback win over Atletico Mineiro.

Wellington Nem and Julio Cesar scored second-half goals to turn the game around after Werley had given Atletico the interval lead.

Seventh-placed Sao Paulo are unlikely to challenge for the title but lie just three points further back, and five behind leaders Corinthians, with four games to play after Luis Fabiano's double earned his side a 2-0 win against Avai, who slip to the bottom after America's win.
