Police say the goalkeeper of Brazil's most popular football club refuses to submit to DNA tests in connection to his former girlfriend's disappearance and alleged murder.

Bruno Souza, in handcuffs and wearing a red prison uniform, is in custody in the city of Belo Horizonte, where police believe his ex-girlfriend was killed.

Inspector Edson Moreira said on Friday that Souza's lawyers refused to allow him to cooperate by providing DNA samples to assist in their investigation.

Police accuse Souza of ordering the kidnapping and murder of 25-year-old Eliza Samudio. She had been fighting in court to prove that her 4-month-old son was fathered by Souza.
