FIFA VPs back US lawyer's World Cup bid inquiry
ZURICH (AP) FIFA Vice Presidents Michel Platini and Jeffrey Webb say they support ethics investigator Michael Garcia amid reports that senior FIFA colleagues want the American removed.
Garcia is investigating potential wrongdoing, including by FIFA executive committee members, linked to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids won by Russia and Qatar.
Thirteen voters remain on the FIFA board. They were questioned last week and some reportedly disagreed with the investigation.
Platini, president of European soccer's governing body, says he condemned ''any possible attempt to derail the investigation'' and wants the ''process to continue to the very end.''
Webb is the head of the regional body from North and Central America and the Caribbean. He will ''encourage Mr. Garcia to continue with his work.''
Neither acknowledged witnessing attempts in Zurich to undermine Garcia.
