FIFA has hired Swiss journalist Walter De Gregorio as its director of Communications and Public Affairs.

The 46-year-old De Gregorio previously worked for Sepp Blatter as a media consultant during the FIFA president's re-election campaign this year.

FIFA says De Gregorio will begin work on Oct. 1 with current acting director Nicolas Maingot as deputy.

Three weeks later, Blatter will unveil the first details of his project to fight corruption in FIFA and world football.

De Gregorio is a former sports editor of Switzerland's best-selling tabloid Blick, and sports columnist for political weekly Die Weltwoche.

Blatter gave De Gregorio his first official interview after the contentious 2018 and 2022 World Cup votes last December.
