The 35-year-old recently expressed dissatisfaction with his performances for United this season and hinted he might be ready to quit the game. Ferguson immediately responded by offering Scholes a one-year contract extension, since when the issue has gone quiet. But, in the wake of Scholes' goalscoring input into United's Champions League win over AC Milan in the San Siro, the question of his future is back on the agenda. Whilst Ferguson revealed the midfielder, regarded as one of the best players of his generation, is still pondering whether to continue, the United boss stressed his confidence in Scholes remaining an integral member of his squad for another 12 months. "I would be happy to do something about Scholes' contract but there is nothing yet," said Ferguson. "It depends on what Paul thinks himself and I haven't addressed it with him. "But he was brilliant in Milan and his form in the last few weeks has been incredible. "There is no need for him to think of retirement like some people were saying a few weeks ago. "He is showing on the field what he is capable of and, to me, another year would not be a problem for the lad." Scholes has been involved in nine of United's 11 Premier League title triumphs and, after famously being suspended for their 1999 Champions League final win over Bayern Munich, finally got his hands on a coveted medal when he played in the victory over Chelsea nine years later.
