Fans plan classic trolling for Marco Materazzi ahead of derby clash
Zinedine Zidane head-butting Marco Materazzi in the chest remains one of the most iconic moments in World Cup history. The Frenchman driving his head into Materazzi's chest in 2006 left an indelible mark in sports history. There have been statues erected (and then subsequently removed) in the head-butt's honor, for crying out loud. Basically, the legacy of the head-butt is not going away.
These days, Zidane is coaching Real Madrid while Materazzi is plying his trade in the Indian Super League with Chennaiyin. With a derby match coming up against Kerala Blasters on Saturday, Kerala Blasters fans have organized a brilliant and simple reminder of the '06 World Cup incident: Zidane masks.
Fans Abdul Hadhi and Asheem will distribute 35,000 Zidane masks ahead of the south Indian derby, per SportsCafe India.
“I am sure everyone remembers the incident that happened in the World Cup final, where this coach got one of the greats of the game sent off. He affected one of the greatest players in the world, who reacted to it. We want to show him that we may also have to react to it. And that the world remembers Zidane and not Materazzi,” Hadhi said.
Upon hearing about the plan, Materazzi seemed pretty unbothered.
"Did they spend lots of money for it? I would use that money for food instead," Materazzi said.
Sounds like a derby, indeed.
