Fabio Capello survives meeting of Russian football leadership
MOSCOW -- Fabio Capello survived a crucial meeting of the Russian Football Union's executive committee on Wednesday amid widespread speculation the national coach would be fired, but faces talks on his future.
Capello's future with the 2018 World Cup host team has been in jeopardy after poor results, including a 1-0 loss to Austria this month that left Russia in danger of failing to qualify for the 2016 European Championship.
That led to calls for him to be fired, with Russia's former FIFA vice-president Vyacheslav Koloskov claiming Capello would be removed at Wednesday's meeting.
However, RFU acting president Nikita Simonyan told Tass that Capello remained in his post after the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, and would meet RFU bosses ''on the subject of either continuing to work or a separation.''
