Michael Essien has agreed a two-year extension to his Chelsea contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2015.

Essien, who is out of Ghana's World Cup team because of a knee injury which has sidelined him since Jan. 15, said Friday he agreed the deal because Chelsea had shown confidence in him.

The Ghana midfielder joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2005 and has scored 22 goals in 185 appearances.

Despite his absence for virtually half the season, Chelsea won the Premier League and FA Cup double.
